VZV advances in Europe and defeats national champion VOC

VZV celebrated reaching the third round of the European Cup after defeating Swiss club Winterthur over two matches, both played in ’t Veld. The club said at least 1,000 supporters attended each game. A week later, VZV defeated Dutch national champion VOC 30-26 in ’t Veld and remained unbeaten at the top of the Super Handball League with 10 points from five matches. VOC had taken a 10-13 lead after 20 minutes, but VZV reduced the deficit to 15-16 by halftime and pulled away after the break. Pien van der Geest, Esma Staal and Josien van den Hoek helped turn the match around, while goalkeeper Camay Berkhout made important saves.

VOC had four points from six matches and stood tenth in the standings. VZV’s next league match was against national champion VOC; the European Cup’s third-round opponent had not been specified.

SEW is preparing to face Maccabi Haaazim Ramat Gan in the third round of the European Cup. The West Frisian handball club is taking extra security precautions and is in contact with local authorities, according to European Cup consultant and manager Vincent Baten. He said the clubs have a good understanding and want the matches to be played safely. Because travel to Israel is not recommended due to the unsafe situation, SEW plans to host both matches. Maccabi has agreed and wants the games to be played over one weekend. SEW is due to provide the European Handball Federation with the dates, venue and times by Friday. The ties are currently scheduled for the weekends of 7–8 and 14–15 November, with ticket sales expected to begin once the arrangements are submitted.
