Allegations of discrimination in UWV fraud enforcement

Reports based on confidential documents and accounts from current and former employees alleged that UWV’s Enforcement Department more often imposed fines, and imposed higher fines, in fraud investigations involving people with bicultural or non-traditionally Dutch surnames. The reports also alleged racism, discrimination and ethnic profiling within the department’s workplace culture. UWV’s new chief executive, Abdeluheb Choho, apologised and said he opposed racism. Social Affairs Minister Hans Vijlbrief called the alleged unequal treatment unacceptable and asked UWV for a thorough investigation and appropriate measures. National Coordinator against Discrimination and Racism Rabin Baldewsingh condemned the allegations, while trade union FNV said it was shocked but not surprised.

Transavia cost-cutting programme

Transavia announced a large-scale cost-cutting programme to improve profitability after reporting insufficient profits. It remains unclear whether the measures will lead to job losses. One report said wage concessions from staff, or a pay freeze, could be considered.

Compensation for wrongly dismissed warehouse worker

A Tempo-Team agency worker who worked at a clothing warehouse in Oud-Gastel was dismissed immediately after being suspected of stealing two Calvin Klein boxer shorts. He said the underwear was his own, and a court found the dismissal unjustified.

SCP report on support for informal carers

The Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) said informal carers need more government support, including the option of paid leave for caregiving. The report identified excessive strain as a problem for people caring for someone close to them.
