US serviceman charged with murder and robbery in Okinawa

Japanese authorities charged 20-year-old US Marine Devin Jacob Ballard with the murder and robbery of 39-year-old Anna Yagi in a hotel in Naha, Okinawa, according to Japanese media. Yagi was reportedly strangled with a phone cable, and her wallet and backpack were allegedly taken. Ballard was arrested on October 4 after an officer saw him in Okinawa City and recognized features matching security-camera footage. He reportedly denied involvement. Because he was allegedly off duty and was arrested outside a US base, the case is being handled by Japanese authorities.

The case has fueled anger on Okinawa over the US military presence and a perceived lack of effective action against crimes involving US service members. The US military has announced restrictions including a curfew, while local confidence in such measures remains low.
