Tilburg Eleven-Eleven carnival opening

The Eleven-Eleven carnival-season opening in Tilburg will go ahead after the municipality, the Carnival Foundation Tilburg and hospitality businesses reached agreements following a dispute over the admission of minors. The event will take place in the city centre, including activities for young people in the squares.

The parties agreed that the carnival must remain open and inclusive while safety takes priority. Young people may be refused only if they have consumed alcohol, behave unsafely or cause nuisance, rather than solely because they are underage. The municipality will share responsibility for safety outside hospitality premises and will deploy buddies to monitor conditions. The mayor described the arrangements as a pilot for future editions.

Tilburg talks over minors at 11 November carnival opening

2 sources

Tilburg’s hospitality businesses and the municipality are in dispute over whether minors must be admitted to party venues during the 11 November opening of the carnival season. Businesses have declined to sign an agreement requiring access for everyone and say they need to be able to refuse people at busy times for safety reasons, particularly teenagers who may have consumed alcohol beforehand. They risk a €2,500 fine for each minor refused entry. The municipality and hospitality sector are due to meet with the Tilburg Carnival Foundation on Tuesday evening. Political parties and the carnival foundation expect an agreement to be reached, while acknowledging that admitting minors creates safety and alcohol-control challenges. The municipality had not commented ahead of the meeting.
