Dispute over minors at Tilburg carnival-season opening

Tilburg municipality and local hospitality businesses are in dispute over whether minors must always be admitted to venues at the city’s Eleventh of the Eleventh carnival-season opening. The businesses have refused to sign a municipal agreement requiring everyone to be welcome at the party locations; refusal to admit teenagers could lead to a €2,500 fine per case.

The municipality says carnival should be accessible to minors as well as adults. Hospitality representatives say they need to be able to refuse people at busy times for safety reasons, citing teenagers who arrive intoxicated after drinking in advance. They also say businesses remain responsible for alcohol rules and safety, and consider the proposed requirement unworkable. The two sides are due to meet, and the event’s arrangements remain unresolved.

The creators of New Kids are releasing Carnival, a film set around the Brabant celebration. It is due to open in cinemas on 11 November, with its premiere in Tilburg. Several scenes were filmed in Brabant. The film follows four friends, played by Huub Smit, Tim Haars, Guido Pollemans and Fresku, whose carnival plans are disrupted when one of them meets a 12-year-old daughter whose existence he did not know and is asked to care for her. Henry van Loon and Guus Meeuwis also appear; Meeuwis plays a version of himself. A single report said Jan Biggel's role was cancelled after he disclosed it prematurely. Smit, who plays singer Tinus, has also been booked for carnival performances before the film's release.
