North Holland has a reported shortage of 30,000 hectares of recreation space, roughly twice the area of Texel, with the greatest shortages in cities and urbanised areas such as Amsterdam. The province expects demand for outdoor recreation to grow as more residents hike, cycle, exercise and take part in other outdoor activities. It estimates there will be 95 million additional leisure activities by 2040. The province also expects its population to increase to 3.25 million by 2040 and more than 3.4 million by 2050. Deputy Esther Rommel said the shortage could be addressed by taking recreation into account from the outset, although the available account ends before further details are given.
