Storm Boelo causes damage and disruption in the Netherlands

19 sources

Storm Boelo brought strong winds, fallen trees and disruption across the Netherlands after Storm Austen had caused damage the previous day. A cyclist was killed in Amsterdam when a tree fell, while a motorist was injured after a tree hit a moving car in Amsterdam-Noord. Fallen trees damaged homes and vehicles and blocked roads, including the N207 near Alphen aan den Rijn. A bus in Friesland ended up in the water after colliding with a tree. Schiphol cancelled dozens of flights, and an event at Amsterdam’s NDSM wharf ended early as a precaution. Boelo became the Netherlands’ first official storm of 2026 after force 9 average winds were recorded on Vlieland. Reports put peak gusts at up to 115 kilometres per hour in IJmuiden. The KNMI’s code yellow warning for strong gusts in coastal areas remained in force until the night from Sunday to Monday. A kite surfer is missing off Scheveningen, according to reports.

Storm Austen brought rain and strong winds to North Holland, though no actual storm was reported there. Some trees were blown down, including in Amsterdam. Rainfall was lower than elsewhere in the country, with 10 mm recorded in Medemblik and 14 mm at Schiphol, compared with up to 55 mm elsewhere, according to a single report. Strong to stormy southerly winds are expected to increase again, with a chance of a southerly storm on Texel and gusts up to 90 km/h. Code yellow is in force from 22:00 until 14:00 on Monday because of strong gusts. A further 20 to 30 mm of rain is forecast overnight and into Monday, when hail and thunder are also possible. Conditions are expected to remain wet and unsettled until the middle of next week.
