Increase in Amsterdam road casualties in 2025

Amsterdam recorded 3,950 road casualties in 2025, an 8% increase from the previous year, according to the municipality’s Road Safety Monitor based on ambulance data. More than half involved cyclists: 1,546 people were riding non-electric bicycles, 504 regular e-bikes and 243 fatbikes. The number of e-bike and fatbike casualties rose from about 500 in 2024 to 747 in 2025. Alderman Muskops attributed the rise in part to the growing number and use of e-bikes.

The monitor found no increase in crashes on roads where the speed limit was reduced to 30 km/h; incidents instead occurred on 50 km/h and access roads. The municipality said it has taken measures at previously dangerous locations, including raised crossings and zebra crossings. It introduced a fatbike ban in Vondelpark last year and expects an evaluation and possible next steps in November, including more information on possible national measures.

20 km/h cycling trial on Amsterdam's Amstelveenseweg

5 sources

Amsterdam has started a trial on the Amstelveenseweg in Amsterdam-Zuid in which signs ask cyclists to keep to a maximum speed of 20 km/h. The municipality is examining whether clearly displayed speed limits lead cyclists to slow down and whether that can improve safety on the narrow, winding cycle path, which crosses many side streets and has regular accidents.
