Helmond as a frikandel city

Helmond was described as a centre of frikandel production and consumption. A trade magazine named it the Netherlands’ frikandel city, citing the snack’s regional history: Jan Bekkers made the first frikandels in nearby Deurne in 1959, and Chris van Lieshout opened Helmond’s first frikandel factory in 1977.

Frans and Corrine de Bie of cafeteria De Braak said frikandels remain their most popular snack and described different ways of serving them, including with mayonnaise, curry and onions. Frans said the product contains pork and horse meat, herbs and salt, rejecting claims that it contains animal organs or eyes. A separate report noted that National Frikandel Day falls on 4 February.
