Uncertainty over Moerdijk’s future amid energy plans

Residents of Moerdijk were told in November 2025 that their village could have to make way for expanded industry and energy infrastructure under the Powerport plans. The municipal council subsequently supported further study of expansion east of the village, while seeking compensation measures for residents. A planned national decision was postponed from December 2025 to June 2026 as the national and provincial governments sought further research, extending uncertainty for residents, entrepreneurs and farmers.
In late June 2026, the national government, province and municipality agreed to give priority to examining an alternative that would allow Moerdijk to remain. No irreversible decisions on major energy projects have been taken, but the village’s future remains uncertain. In late September, Krukweg was selected as the preferred site for a new high- and medium-voltage substation, raising concerns for people living nearby and on the edge of the village. Responsibility for Powerport remains with State Secretary Jo-Annes de Bat.
