Dirk Scheringa’s art collection grew from a single drawing by Carel Willink into about 1,400 works, and his Scheringa Museum of Realism in Spanbroek attracted around 50,000 visitors a year at its peak. After DSB Bank collapsed in 2009, the museum was emptied before a planned new building opened, and Scheringa said he never saw the collection again. Part of it was later acquired by Museum MORE in Gorssel. Scheringa and his wife Baukje recently returned to the abandoned museum for the documentary series “The Dream of Dirk – a Dalí in Spanbroek.” One of the collection’s notable works was Tamara de Lempicka’s “La Musicienne,” which Scheringa bought at a 2002 New York auction for €3.8 million after competing with Madonna. The painting, later sold for €11 million, was displayed in Spanbroek before it was stolen with a Dalí in May 2009. Art detective Arthur Brand recovered both paintings seven years later. The four-part documentary looks back at the museum’s development, closure and theft.
