Dirk Scheringa’s lost art collection

Dirk Scheringa and his wife Baukje revisited the former Scheringa Museum of Realism in Spanbroek for the documentary series “The Dream of Dirk – a Dalí in Spanbroek.” The museum, which grew from Scheringa’s first Carel Willink drawing into a collection of about 1,400 works and attracted around 50,000 visitors a year, closed in 2009 after the collapse of DSB Bank. The collection was removed before the planned new museum opened, and Scheringa handed in the key without being able to say goodbye to the staff.

Part of the collection was later acquired by Museum MORE in Gorssel, but Scheringa says he has not seen the paintings again because the loss remains too painful. The four-part series looks back at the museum’s creation, expansion plans, closure and an art theft. Scheringa still has a legal dispute with the government, while he and Baukje continue to meet former employees at reunions.
