Dronten plans tens of millions in borrowing for growth investments

Dronten plans to borrow tens of millions of euros in the coming years to help finance its intended growth to 60,000 residents by 2050. The investments would include school buildings and infrastructure, marking a change from recent years, when the municipality paid for projects from its own assets. Alderman for Finance Barry Hoogezand said the borrowing felt uncomfortable but was necessary and did not represent an unacceptable financial risk.

The higher debt will increase interest costs for the municipal budget, prompting Dronten to scrutinize the investments more closely. Hoogezand said some projects could be postponed by one or two years, although he did not specify which ones. He said Dronten remained in the average category across the relevant financial standards.

Flevoland provincial government is moving further right, D66 says

1 source

Tiko Smetsers, D66’s leader in the Flevoland Provincial Council, said the provincial government was gradually pursuing a more right-wing political course after initially making a hesitant start. Smetsers entered the opposition after the March elections, when BBB formed a coalition with VVD, PVV, ChristenUnie and SGP. He said the elections would determine whether Flevoland’s future would be conservative or progressive. Smetsers said he had initially seen a provincial executive that mainly maintained existing policies and took few initiatives. He also said that the government’s right-wing direction had not been immediately clear in its policy.
