Flevoland provincial government is moving further right, D66 says

Tiko Smetsers, D66’s leader in the Flevoland Provincial Council, said the provincial government was gradually pursuing a more right-wing political course after initially making a hesitant start. Smetsers entered the opposition after the March elections, when BBB formed a coalition with VVD, PVV, ChristenUnie and SGP. He said the elections would determine whether Flevoland’s future would be conservative or progressive. Smetsers said he had initially seen a provincial executive that mainly maintained existing policies and took few initiatives. He also said that the government’s right-wing direction had not been immediately clear in its policy.

Almere council members David de Vreede and Alexander Sjump left the SP after having served respectively as an alderman and a councillor in Almere. De Vreede said they had not had an opportunity to explain their reasons, concerns and frustrations to the party’s national leadership before their departure.
