Visa issues affecting Russian gymnasts at the Rotterdam World Championships

9 sources

Dutch authorities refused visas to reigning world champion Angelina Melnikova and gymnasts Viktoria Listunova and Anna Kalmykova for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. The Russian federation said it had been told that one or more Schengen states considered them a threat to international relations; the Dutch health and sports ministry said visa decisions were assessed individually under the EU Visa Code and were unrelated to sporting performance. World Gymnastics said it could not explain the refusals, while stressing that visa decisions are the responsibility of the Dutch authorities. Several other Russian gymnasts initially awaited visa decisions, but Russia was listed with a full team of 12 competitors when the championships began. The team competed under the name World Gymnastics 2 and was leading the team standings after the second of six qualifying subdivisions. World Gymnastics rejected a Russian request to remove the event's status as an Olympic qualifying competition because of the visa situation.
