Court ruling on accommodation for two Ukrainian brothers in Hengelo

2 sources

Hengelo expelled two Ukrainian brothers from its Hazenweg shelter after staff found hard drugs, dangerous materials that could be used for a drug laboratory and a large knife in their rooms. The brothers challenged the exclusion; they said sulphuric acid found there was intended for degreasing metal. Reports also said no criminal acts had yet been established against them. A court ruled that Hengelo must provide the brothers with accommodation again. The municipality has refused to readmit them to the shelter despite the ruling and faces a penalty of €2,000 for each day it does not do so. Hengelo has asked the national government for greater powers to act in such cases, while support from The Hague appears not to be forthcoming.
