European Commission climate adaptation proposal

9 sources

The European Commission presented a proposal to help EU countries prepare for the effects of climate change, including a scenario of 3°C of warming by 2100. It calls on national and local authorities to factor climate risks into policies and infrastructure planning, and to clarify responsibility for reducing risks such as flooding and wildfires. A new website is intended to provide governments and companies with regional climate-risk information. The proposal also seeks to expand access to affordable insurance against climate-related disasters. The Commission said that three quarters of damage from natural disasters in the EU had previously not been insured and plans to discuss options with insurers. Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said adaptation measures do not replace efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
