Childcare organisations consider measures against third-hand smoke

Childcare organisation Kober in West Brabant is examining whether additional measures are needed to protect babies and toddlers from harmful residues of cigarette smoke on clothing, hair, furniture and toys. Smoking is prohibited in and around its locations, but employees may smoke outside the grounds during breaks and return to work afterward. Kober currently has no specific policy beyond general hygiene requirements. Nurse and smoking cessation coach Lianda Goossens said awareness among staff was important, while acknowledging that preventing residues from entering childcare facilities is difficult.
At Korein, which operates in the Eindhoven and Helmond region, employees have already been informed about hygiene measures such as washing their hands and changing outerwear after smoking. The organisation also supports employees who want to quit, but has no separate third-hand-smoke policy and has not clarified whether changing clothes is mandatory.
