Researchers from the Netherlands Brain Institute studied, for the first time, a unique set of brains from people who had died with anorexia nervosa. They found marked biological changes in the hypothalamus, the brain region involved in regulating hunger and metabolism.
The findings were described as an important addition to research into anorexia nervosa, which has a high mortality rate.
