The FBI arrested Wanying Zhang, 34, at Los Angeles International Airport as she was preparing to fly to Shanghai. U.S. prosecutors suspect she acted as an unregistered foreign agent for China. Zhang lives in California and works in real estate with her husband. According to federal investigators, Zhang traveled to Seattle in September 2025 to collect photographs, videos and registration information about Lai Ting-yu, the eldest son of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, and send them to China. Prosecutors also allege that she spied on members of his family. The reported surveillance was captured by nearby security cameras. The account ended while describing possible involvement by others.
