At least 56 wolf cubs were born in the Netherlands this year, according to figures from BIJ12, which monitors wolves for the provinces. Of those cubs, 37 were born in Gelderland, 13 in Drenthe and six in Utrecht. The cubs were recorded by wildlife cameras and the footage was checked by specialists at BIJ12's national wolf reporting centre. Wolves may also be establishing themselves in five additional areas: the Lauwers region on the Friesland-Groningen border, Oost-Groningen, the Vechtdal region in Overijssel, Noord-Veluwe in Gelderland and Midden-Brabant. The Netherlands now has 14 wolf packs, while a researcher said there is space for at least twice that number.
