French student protests broaden into a wider movement

3 sources

Student protests that had continued across France for nearly a month broadened into a wider movement over education issues, high fuel prices, rising housing costs and government policy. Suzanne Nijdam, chair of one of the largest French student associations, and other unions submitted 10 demands to the Education Ministry, including further investment, but the ministry has not yet addressed them. Demonstrators marched toward Prime Minister Lecornu’s official residence, while unions announced larger protests for Saturday. Greta Thunberg joined a protest at a secondary school in Saint-Denis, near Paris. At a blockade near Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, law student Adam Boucherca said far-right youths threw glass bottles at protesters, injuring him and a friend. Politicians from La France Insoumise attended the blockade. LFI representatives criticised police intervention; one said that more than 7,000 people, most of them minors, had been arrested, while another said student demonstrators had been maimed. A student who supported the protesters’ demands criticised the blockades and said the movement lacked clear leadership. A single report cited an Ipsos poll finding that 54% supported the demonstrations and 40% opposed them.
