Welsh nurse suspended for misappropriating £750,000 from nursing-home resident

A Welsh nurse, Rebecca Louise Burwood, was suspended from nursing after allegedly taking £750,000 from a 99-year-old woman over six years while managing a nursing home in Flintshire. The money was reportedly used for cosmetic procedures, renovations to Burwood’s house, and the purchase of a car and a motorhome. The woman, who has since died, had no family and was described as vulnerable and dependent on Burwood for social contact.

The UK nursing regulator found that Burwood had abused her position and pressured the woman to make the payments, including by taking her to a bank to try to lift a block on her account. Burwood will not face imprisonment, while the police investigation was reported to be continuing. The Nursing and Midwifery Council described the conduct as serious misconduct and suspended Burwood for life, preventing her from working as a nurse.
