Residents can hand in knives and other weapons at the police station in Zaandijk until next Sunday without fear of prosecution, according to the account. The collection week was organized by the municipalities of Zaanstad, Oostzaan and Wormerland together with the police, and mainly targets young people. Police spokesperson Jan Martijn Stout said the campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks of possessing weapons and encourage people to surrender them. The campaign is being held for the sixth consecutive year. A criminalist said the initiative should not be expected to eliminate all weapon-related violence in the region. Similar surrender actions are also taking place in other municipalities, including Amsterdam and Velsen.
