Waalwijk mayor publicly addresses abusive messages

Waalwijk mayor Sacha Ausems publicly shared a personally directed message containing abusive and dehumanizing language after earlier social-media responses to her congratulations for residents who had become Dutch citizens. She said she wanted to challenge the normalization of such messages and open a discussion about decency, while allowing room for differing opinions. She had deactivated responses to the earlier post because of the volume of offensive comments.

Ausems said she would have invited the sender for a conversation over coffee if the person lived in her municipality, and that previous conversations had ended with expressions of regret. She planned to discuss with her team how to handle boundary-crossing responses in the future. The incident followed the burning of three vehicles used by enforcement officers, which Ausems suspected was arson driven by dissatisfaction with the government.
