VR study of cycling-route safety in Zuidoost

The municipality began a study into how cycling routes in Zuidoost can be made to feel safer, particularly for women. Participants rode for about 15 minutes through a virtual version of the routes while researchers measured brain activity, then identified places they considered unsafe and suggested improvements.

The municipality is conducting the study with Elephant Path CS, a group of specialists in environmental psychology, public space, lighting, virtual reality and neurofeedback. The research examines measures beyond additional street lighting, including conditions in poorly lit sections and at viaducts. It is scheduled to run until Thursday 29 October.
