Unpublished investigation estimates widespread mortgage fraud in the Netherlands

◆1 source

An unpublished investigation by the Financial Expertise Centre reportedly estimates that between 6,000 and 11,000 homes in the Netherlands have been bought with forged documents in recent years. Criminals allegedly manipulated mortgage applications using documents such as false payslips, employer statements, annual accounts or tax returns, allowing them to acquire properties for illegal activities. The investigation was commissioned by the previous cabinet and has reportedly been with the Ministry of Justice and Security for more than six months. Members of parliament, the Dutch Association of Banks and the professional association of notaries have been concerned about this form of fraud for several years.
