Maris K., 47, from Latvia, stood trial over the death of 40-year-old homeless man Roché in The Hague in December 2023 and the violent robbery of a heavily pregnant woman in Capelle aan den IJssel. Prosecutors alleged that K. beat Roché to death with a blunt object while he was asleep and stole his phone; K. denied this. Prosecutors sought a 17-year prison sentence and compulsory psychiatric treatment under a TBS order.
One report said the woman suffered fractures to her eye socket, cheekbone and jaw during the robbery and gave birth to a daughter three days later. She told the court that the injuries made the birth particularly painful.
