Prosecutors sought a two-year prison sentence, including one year suspended, and a five-year driving ban for Stefan K. over the death of Belgian hiker Jos during a walk near Bergeijk on 22 January 2025. The prosecution said K., then 29, was driving more than 80 km/h on a road with a 60 km/h limit and had amphetamine and GHB in his system when he struck Jos, who died at the scene. It said he did not brake until after the collision and that Jos would have crossed safely had K. obeyed the speed limit.
K. told the court he had panicked after learning that his girlfriend was in hospital following an argument. He also apologized to Jos' relatives. The prosecution also sought addiction treatment as a condition of the suspended sentence. The relatives were not at the hearing and said they wanted K. to get help and prevent further victims. The verdict is due on 20 November.
