Geldmaat and De Nederlandsche Bank are testing 100-euro banknotes in ATMs at 46 locations in the Netherlands. The trial followed concerns that the 50-euro note may no longer be sufficient for larger cash withdrawals after prices rose substantially since the euro was introduced.
According to the account, 57 percent of customers offered the choice selected a 100-euro note, with the share increasing for larger withdrawals. Some retailers, including a market vendor and fast-food businesses, do not welcome or accept the notes because of the difficulty of giving change. DNB advises consumers to use them mainly for large purchases. A decision on whether to keep the notes in the ATMs is expected at the beginning of next year; the possible use of 200-euro notes has also been mentioned, but is not part of the current trial.
