Traffic congestion during construction in Haarlem’s Schalkwijk district

Traffic jams were reported in Haarlem’s Schalkwijk district amid the construction of thousands of homes, road projects and the new Spaarnepoort public transport hub. The main bottleneck was at the intersection of Schipholweg and Europaweg, where a temporary road had improved traffic flow around the construction site, although congestion toward the Buitenrustbruggen remained heavy during rush hour. Cyclists and pedestrians could not use the Buitenrustbruggen and were being diverted via Graafschapstraat. Construction work also included installing retaining walls for an underground bicycle parking facility and demolishing the former Bruynzeel building on Schipholweg.
The municipality said several major projects were taking place at the same time, including work on Europaweg, Prins Bernhardlaan, Schalkwijk Centre and housing developments on Schipholweg and Spaarnepoort. It said it coordinated projects where possible, monitored traffic and could deploy traffic controllers or adjust traffic management. The municipality also said it wanted to encourage walking, cycling and public transport while recognising that some residents depended on cars. It could not give a date for when congestion would ease, saying Schalkwijk would continue to be developed and traffic could take time to find new routes.
