The cycling season was due to end on Saturday with the 120th Tour of Lombardy, a race from Bergamo to Como. Como was returning as the finish after a year’s absence. Tadej Pogačar was absent, meaning the race was set to have a different winner for the first time in six years. The event was also to mark the farewell of a Dutch cycling icon.
