Tom De Bruyne discussed how language shapes views of people with refugee backgrounds

Tom De Bruyne argued that the terms used to describe a person with a refugee background shape how that person is perceived. He contrasted labels including asylum seeker, political refugee and migrant worker, saying they can frame the person as a threat, someone in need or a worker who helps keep a supermarket chain operating.

Belgian behavioral psychologist Tom de Bruyne discussed Dutch politics in an interview with Pim Sedee. De Bruyne, who co-founded Voor Ons Nederland and previously advised Mark Rutte during an election campaign, said the Netherlands was trapped by rules and protocols and considered how that could be changed. The conversation addressed migration, climate and political protest, as well as ways to build public support for far-reaching decisions. De Bruyne said Rob Jetten should act more like a captain and argued that the VVD had taken a wrong turn with anti-migration sentiment and was stuck with what he called a toxic family. He also discussed Mona Keijzer’s period at the BBB, saying the party had been treated unfairly. The interview was presented as an episode of Studio Sedee.
