Tilburg denies vegan menu influenced permit decision

Forum for Democracy in Tilburg accused the municipality of requiring the owner of Home by Gladys, a catering business in Udenhout, to turn the venue into a vegan lunchroom before granting a permit. The claim prompted criticism of alleged left-wing influence, but the municipality said the business could not operate there because the environmental plan prohibits catering at that location and that the menu was irrelevant.
The municipality had reportedly told the entrepreneur in April 2025 that she needed an environmental permit, which had still not been obtained about a year and a half later. A document sent to the entrepreneur mentioned possible alternative catering concepts, including “a vegan or fruit-themed concept,” but the municipality said this was an example rather than a requirement that the business remove meat from its menu. The venue is still at risk of closing.
