Thirteen-year sentence for attempted murder in Zaandam

A 45-year-old Russian man, Mouslim A., was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the attempted murder of a 41-year-old man in Zaandam on 10 July of the previous year. He followed the victim by bicycle, shot him in the leg at close range, and tried to fire again, but his gun malfunctioned; a later shot missed. He fled, leaving behind a silenced firearm, and later changed vehicles. The prosecution had sought 18 years.

A. said he had acted out of family revenge over a 2021 shooting in Ukraine and had intended only to wound the victim. The court ruled that he had accepted the risk of killing him and that the attack had been planned for another person, though the person who commissioned it and the motive remain unknown. It also found that A. had intended to throw sulphuric acid at the victim, although he said he had planned to use it to destroy traces. Searches at his home in Moers, Germany, found identity documents, surveillance equipment, GPS trackers and a firearm; investigators also found searches relating to Zaandam and the conversion of $500,000 into euros.
