Study finds high costs for extending grave rights in North Holland

A study by the Laudius Institute found that the cost of extending private grave rights for 10 years varied considerably among Dutch municipalities. Amstelveen had the highest reported price, at €4,475, while Haarlemmermeer and Hilversum charged about €3,100. Huizen, Laren and Wijdemeren followed at an average of €2,864. The study excluded special types of graves, such as nature, urn and double graves.

The municipality of Amstelveen attributed its higher fees to the maintenance and distinctive location of Zorgvlied cemetery. One of the lowest reported prices was €1,004.30 in Middenmeer, in Hollands Kroon, although fees varied among that municipality’s cemeteries. The study said that 7.6% of people always extended a grave, with costs cited as the main reason for not doing so. Most respondents supported national maximum rates and lower fees for low-income relatives.
