South Africans voted for their municipal councils on Wednesday. Johannesburg, the country's economic centre and formerly an African National Congress stronghold, could get a mayor from the Democratic Alliance, which had led the opposition for decades and now governs with the ANC.

The vote took place one day after the US midterm elections, with a potential shift in political power at stake in both countries.
