Six-year sentence for Rhoneweg shooting

A 40-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison for shooting another man in the abdomen on Rhoneweg in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on 20 April. He had sought out the victim, with whom he had a prior conflict; an argument and struggle followed, during which a converted gas-alarm pistol discharged. He was also convicted of weapons possession.
The court found it was not established that he deliberately shot the victim or acted with premeditation, but ruled that he should have foreseen the risk of a struggle while carrying a loaded firearm. The victim’s bullet remains in his body, and the man must pay about €16,500 in compensation.
