Six Flags to install safety belts after fatal roller-coaster accident

Six Flags is to install safety belts on three roller coasters: Goliath at a park in Atlanta, Georgia, Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, and Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois. The belts will supplement the existing restraint bars. The move followed the death of a 42-year-old man who was thrown from Goliath in early October; other riders were injured after being struck by him. The ride reaches about 60 metres in height and speeds of up to 113 kilometres per hour.
Goliath remains closed, along with other attractions at the company’s parks, as a precaution, and no reopening date has been given. Six Flags hired independent engineers and specialists to inspect the rides and assess safety procedures. Goliath had passed its annual inspection, according to Georgia authorities, while media reports raised questions about a worn shock absorber and earlier maintenance and safety issues. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Six Flags also closed its X2 roller coaster in September after visitors reported brain injuries and sued the company.
