Sharp decline in Zavodovski Island penguin population linked to climate change

British scientists reported that the population of storm band penguins on Zavodovski Island in the Southern Ocean fell by 63 percent over 14 years. The island had about 900,000 storm band penguins and 90,000 macaroni penguins in 2011; the number of macaroni penguins increased during the same period. Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey attributed the decline in storm band penguins to climate change. They said warmer water had driven krill farther south, while sea ice and a lack of suitable nesting islands prevented the penguins from following their food. The scientists said macaroni penguins may have fared better because they eat fish and crustaceans as well as krill.
