Seniors who babysit dogs through Stichting OOPOEH reported improvements in mood, social contact and physical health, according to research by PwC among 688 seniors affiliated with the foundation. Of those who babysit at least once a month, 94% said they experienced more social contact, 83% reported a better mood and 72% an improvement in physical health. In total, 99% were satisfied with babysitting and 96% with the foundation’s mediation.
The Amsterdam-based foundation connects people aged 55 and over with dog owners seeking a reliable babysitter. It said it had created more than 5,600 such matches in over 14 years, while demand from dog owners exceeded the number of available seniors. One arrangement pairs retired nurse Wim with Daisy, a rough-haired dachshund owned by Evelien Rooyen in Diemen; he looks after her once or twice a week, giving Rooyen more freedom while providing him with company and regular walks.
