SC Purmerland cancelled all its matches that weekend after the death of 20-year-old first-team player Miron Persijn. The cause of death was not disclosed. Persijn had been part of the first team since the start of the season and had played with the team the previous Saturday.

Persijn was the son of Ab Persijn, a former FC Volendam footballer and assistant coach at Purmersteijn. The club also opened its cafeteria the following day for people who knew him to meet, share memories or sit together.
