Sardinian restaurants begin month-long screen-free dining trial

Fifteen restaurants in Sardinia were set to temporarily ban phones and other screens at the table for a month, in an initiative led by the island’s children’s ombudsman, Anna Cau. The voluntary project, called “At table without screens,” aims to reduce children’s screen use and encourage conversation between parents and children during meals.

Guests must put away or hand in their devices when they begin eating. In return, they receive a package of games or coloring pages designed by the Italian Federation of Pediatricians, along with information about the risks of excessive or unsuitable online content and tips for reducing social media use. The organizers hope more restaurants will join the trial.
