Sanquin tightens snack policy at some donor locations

Sanquin has tightened its policy on snacks for blood and plasma donors, according to the account. At the Delft donor café, donors can no longer take pink cakes, speculaas biscuits, breakfast cakes and syrup waffles themselves; they must ask volunteers for them. Sanquin said both donors and non-donors sometimes took more snacks than reasonably expected. A volunteer in Delft estimated that snacks taken home cost about €1,000 a month, although Sanquin said it could not quantify the losses.

The policy is not mandatory at every Sanquin location, and individual sites can decide how to handle the snacks. They were still available for self-service at locations including Utrecht and Duno football club in The Hague. Sanquin said it did not know how many locations were affected or how often excessive taking occurred, and stressed that donors should continue to feel welcome.
