Ronald Plasterk said that the term “right-wing extremism” was increasingly being applied to anyone to the right of the VVD, which he said amounted to more than a third of the Dutch population according to the latest polls. He argued that the term directly suggests violence and distinguished between Muslims practising their faith and Muslim extremists, identifying attacks as the defining difference. He also pointed to extremists from the left and, above all, from Islam as a danger.
