Ronald Mastenbroek, now 57, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 53. His wife, Monique Doctor, said the diagnosis was a major blow and that their lives had changed significantly.

She said they had hoped things might improve, but understood that the disease would worsen over time. She also said they were gradually losing more of each other as Ronald’s world became smaller.
