Rita Wezenbeek’s work enforcing EU rules on big tech
◆1 source
European Commission official Rita Wezenbeek is leading efforts to enforce EU digital legislation against major technology companies. The Commission has announced an investigation into whether Booking.com has done enough to combat online fraud and phishing. Wezenbeek said investigators would request information from the company and test its processes, including by creating fake accounts to see how quickly fraudulent accounts are removed. Booking.com said it would cooperate fully.
Wezenbeek’s team of about 350 people has been involved in fines imposed on Meta, AliExpress and Google for alleged breaches of the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act. The team is also handling cases involving possible election influence and potentially addictive algorithms on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. A professor of information law said fines were generally not high enough to be truly deterrent, while Wezenbeek said the Commission could also impose periodic penalty payments. She said the EU had the right to set its own rules despite resistance from the United States.
