Return of the Centuripe pyxis to Sicily

Amsterdam’s Allard Pierson museum voluntarily handed the Centuripe pyxis, an ancient vase, to an Italian delegation for its return to Sicily. The vessel had been in the museum’s collection for almost 30 years, since 1997. Research, including an old photographic negative linked to a 1976 wedding photograph, indicated that the vase had probably been illegally excavated from a grave by local tomb robbers and later sold on. The third-century BC storage vessel depicts a wedding scene observed by the Greek god Apollo.
