A fire on the night of 20 to 21 August destroyed Parknest, a community centre in a former café beside a playground in Amsterdam's Flevopark. The initiative, run by Dirk Zaal and about 30 volunteers, is currently operating from a tent that is tolerated by the Oost district, but says it needs a permanent shelter as winter approaches.

A crowdfunding campaign has raised €65,000 for a temporary, wooden-walled portable building, but permission to place it has not yet been granted. The district is examining what is legally possible, and Parknest's initiators are due to hold formal talks with the district in early November about a possible new neighbourhood facility.
