Renee had a son using embryos after her husband's death

Renee Soulhorst’s husband, Marijn, died of acute cardiac arrest in 2021. She later brought legal proceedings to use embryos that the couple had frozen during an ICSI fertility treatment, after being told they would be destroyed because Marijn had not given written permission for posthumous reproduction. A judge ruled in her favor, finding that the clinic had not sufficiently informed the couple about the requirement for such permission. The case led to a change requiring couples to specify what should happen to their embryos if one of them dies unexpectedly.

Renee gave birth to a son in early 2026. The BNNVARA documentary *Inheritance of Love* tells her story. She has now started legal proceedings to give her son Marijn’s surname.
